Alsatian Tart

I was excited for this month’s dinner. Of course, I am always excited for our NHN family dinners, but this month I was particularly looking forward to it. Why? I was making one of my all-time favorite dishes, which includes the mother of all delicious secret ingredients – Crème Fraîche. Crème Fraîche is a wonderful French soured buttercream. While it may sound like Amercian sour cream, it is much more on the creamy side and less on the sour side. And just all-around amazing. I was confident in my meal choice and very confident that Lesley would also find this dish heavenly. Not to mention, the only meat that I would have to cook was bacon, and I can definitely do that. Lasagna Cups

Lasagna is by far one of the world’s best foods. It doesn’t get much better than the multiple layers of multiple cheeses sandwiched together by pasta and flavored with garlic. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The problem with lasagna, though, is the time that it takes to cook it. I don’t want to wait that long for its cheesy goodness, and my girls certainly do not want to wait that long.  (more…)

Chicken and Bacon Pot Pie

Last year I experimented with turkey and rediscovered that any dinner that was wrapped in pie crust is one of the world’s best dinners. As kids, we would sometimes be treated to a frozen dinner of chicken pot pies. Trust me, as a kid it was a treat. Although, I could have done without the squishy peas and nasty cooked carrots. The best part about being an adult is that you don’t have to follow recipes exactly and can buck convention anytime you want when it comes to cooking. (more…)

Plastic Baggie Ice Cream

During the summer months, or more honestly half of spring and fall, the girls and I join my mom for Sunday night ice cream at our local ice cream shop. When my parents first moved to the town we live in now, I heard about this ice cream shop quite often from my mom. Now that we live here as well, I know why she spoke of it in such high regard. It is rich and creamy with several yummy flavors to choose from. Not to mention the building has old-time ice cream shop appeal. You’d think that this heavenly Sunday tradition would fill my and the girls’ taste for ice cream each week. (more…)

Dad’s Famous Grilled Potatoes

Growing up, my dad didn’t cook a lot, but when he did, it was always really good. He typically spent a lot of time on his dishes, and the result was always really great. Except for a couple, which led to some traumatizing flavor experiences. For example, Borscht. Of course, there were times when we weren’t in need of anything fancy, and he felt like firing up the grill. It was these times that he whipped up the most fantastic grilled potatoes. They weren’t his usual extended-time recipes, but their flavor was always amazing and I couldn’t get enough. (more…)
