34 is off to a good start

Birthday month is coming to an official close this week after Lora’s birthday on Wednesday (happy birthday!). All in all, it was a really good one. Riley celebrated with a field day-themed party. Mom celebrated with an extended vacation in Europe. The Bolton’s migrated to Bloomington for a weekend to celebrate. My celebration was a couple of small ones that added up to a great birthday.




My birthday week started with the most amazing cake that my coworker makes for me each year. It takes, I believe, about 6 cups of butter to make and includes malt, Ovaltine, toasted marshmallows and all the chocolate. How could you go wrong? Luckily its big enough to feed our department of 25 and feed me for the next 5 days.

Having leftovers was particularly helpful after a rough morning on the day of my birthday. Not only did both of the girls not say a word about my birthday in the morning, after a week of reminding them all week, Maddie threw the most horrendous of all temper tantrums from the moment she woke up until the moment I left her crying at extended care. Then I had the joy of heading to the DMV to renew my drivers license. Leftover chocolate cake never tasted better after that morning.

That night, the girls came around, both wished me happy birthday and we made up. I was all set to have a relaxing night at home but Maddie got us up and out the door with her excitement about watching Coco in a local park. Apparently her Spanish teacher had been talking it up throughout the week. Riley, catching the excitement, packed us a lovely picnic. It may not have been a couch at home but the movie turned out to be a lot of fun and it was a beautiful night for it.

The next day, the girls and I headed out to the lake house for a sleepover with Lesley and Story. It was a hot day for late September, although the water was not at all hot. Still, it was swimmable and it was good to get in the lake one last time this year. Even better than the swimming was the company. Lesley’s chocolate cake and lobster mac and cheese were the culinary highlights of the evening. Don’t get me wrong, those two things are hard to beat but my favorite part of it all was the family time. And in true NHN family style we laughed together until it was time to go to bed.

Now that is a great birthday and a perfect start to 34.
