Last week was the one-year anniversary of the #MeToo campaign raising awareness of the vast number of women facing sexual assault. While I am 100% behind this movement, I felt that it was lacking in that so many girls, those who are too young or too at-risk to have a voice, were not being acknowledged. I have to admit, when Lesley told me that she was getting a cell phone for Story’s birthday, I had my reservations. The world is a scary place online these days, and even though all of our girls have access to electronics, they have not yet had access to a platform that could post their thoughts to the whole world. I know Lesley is no fool and would never give Story that kind of access even with a smartphone in hand. Still, she’s one step closer to that world, and it’s scary. (more…)
This weekend, I found myself with a surplus of potatoes. My parents were leaving for a three-week trip and were offloading their perishable items. I was one of the last to visit their house that weekend and ended up with at least five pounds of potatoes. Added to the ones I already had at home, I had roughly seven pounds of potatoes and one pound of sweet potatoes. What was a girl to do? Cook, of course. (more…)
Ali conveniently brought up the concept of “golden birthdays” on the year of Story’s. Story is turning nine on October 9, her golden birthday. Of course, Ali being Ali elaborated and told Story that this should be a grand birthday, a celebration to top all previous celebrations. And Story being Story took her sweet time figuring out just what that celebration would be. I have to say, I think it turned out to be truly golden.
